Preserving retiree health care options
City Council Member Carmen De La Rosa introduced legislation on Jan. 4 to amend Section 12-126 of the city’s administrative code to preserve health care choices for city retirees. The proposed amendment adds a clause that reaffirms the Municipal Labor Committee’s right to negotiate retiree health care and enables the city to continue offering retirees the option of other pay-up health care plans.
The proposed amendment does not alter any of the protections to our health care that the code currently provides. But without this amendment to the administrative code, only one health care plan will be available to Medicare-eligible retirees.
Tell your City Council member to pass this legislation to amend the city’s administrative code and preserve health care options for city retirees.
While we work to preserve a choice of plans with the City Council, a parallel health care fight continues. We are continuing our work to use the federal Medicare Advantage program to try to create a plan that goes beyond GHI Senior Care. Even as we push to make sure this new premium-free plan delivers the quality of care that our retirees deserve, we want to ensure that Medicare-eligible city retirees continue to have other pay-up options available to them. That’s why we need the City Council to pass this amendment to the administrative code.
