Tom Brown is the assistant treasurer of the UFT, and the board chair of the Teachers’ Retirement System of the City of New York. As chair and trustee, he assumes the fiduciary duties with his fellow board members of overseeing the policies, funding and responsibilities of the retirement system to ensure that the benefits for contributors and beneficiaries remain strong.
Tom is a long-time advocate of pension rights. Beginning as a part-time pension consultant for the union in 1997, he became a UFT special representative to the Pension Department in 2007. He has shared his knowledge of pension-related issues at school meetings citywide, conducted pension clinics and workshops, and led training programs for new pension consultants. He co-edits PensionNews, the union’s pension newsletter, and is also co-editor of the Secure Your Future column in the New York Teacher.
With degrees from Brooklyn College and the Universidad de las Americas, Tom became a Spanish teacher at IS 234 in 1978. He has served as both a UFT delegate and chapter leader. Brown has won the UFT’s Albert Smallheiser Award for union service.
Brown is a participant with the National Council on Teacher Retirement, the National Conference on Public Employee Retirement Systems and the National Association of Securities Professionals.
