Acid neutralization tanks are usually located in the basement of the building. All the waste from the science labs and prep rooms is directed into these tanks. They are filled with marble chips and the waste flows through the chips.
These tanks do need to be serviced periodically or else they will require repair. We had an incident in a school where the tank had not received service; it broke open and the contents leaked. In that case the tank couldn’t be repaired but needed to be replaced.
If the tank does need repair work, while it is being done all water service to the labs and prep rooms must be discontinued. Think of the effect this would have on your laboratory schedule!
I suggest you contact your custodian and remind him about the tank and the need for periodic service. If he is not familiar with the servicing process, suggest that he contact his plant manager for further information.
