HONORING PARAPROFESSIONALS: Trina James (seated in white), a paraprofessional at PS 180 who was one of the Manhattan award winners, is cheered on by her colleagues at the Paraprofessional Awards Luncheon at the New York Hilton Midtown on Saturday.

This Week's Focus

Stand with your paraprofessionals on April 2

Wednesday, April 2, is national Paraprofessional Appreciation Day, and we are turning it into a citywide Day of Action! We need the City Council to pass legislation that will give paraprofessionals an annual $10,000 RESPECT check. To show our solidarity with paraprofessionals in their fight for more pay, we are organizing coordinated actions in our schools and coming together from across the city for a rally at City Hall. The more we post on social media and the larger the crowd we have at the rally, the more support we can get in the City Council for this critical legislation. Let's get this done!

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:

Before next Wednesday:

  1. Invite your staff (you can use our invitation template) to a teach-in to plan for April 2 and learn about the RESPECT check legislation.
  2. Hold your teach-in! (Here are slides to present.) At your teach-in:
    • Have staff register for the rally.
    • Come up with a plan to celebrate your school's paraprofessionals on April 2.

On the April 2 Day of Action:

  • Wear blue! Send a group photo to uftphotos@gmail.com.
  • Celebrate the paraprofessionals in your school. Take and share photos of your chapter's celebrations on social media. Tag the UFT in your post.
  • Push out the petition.
  • Gather a group of members to go with you to the rally at City Hall.

TEACH accounts slow to show attendance at required workshop

Reassure your members who are mandated reporters that there is no need to contact the UFT or take any other action if their state TEACH account does not yet reflect their recent attendance at an updated workshop on reporting child abuse and neglect. Anyone who received a certificate of completion from the UFT Teacher Center or took the state's self-directed online course is in compliance. The New York State Education Department encountered a technical issue with uploading the names of educators who have taken the updated workshop, but state officials have reassured us that each person who has taken the workshop will receive the credit.

The state requires that all DOE employees who are mandated reporters, including all classroom teachers and paraprofessionals, take this updated two-hour workshop. If you have members in your school who have not yet taken the class, the UFT Teacher Center is holding free online workshops on Saturday, March 29, and Tuesday, April 1. Another option is the self-directed online course from the state Education Department. If a UFT member was required to take a child abuse workshop originally to get certified, they must take the updated version of the workshop. If not, they will put their certification at risk.

Collect signatures to reelect Victoria Lee as TRS trustee

The UFT Delegate Assembly on March 19 voted overwhelmingly to endorse UFT Treasurer Victoria Lee for reelection as a teacher-member on the TRS board. Our three union representatives on the retirement board are extremely important. Lee, an experienced UFT pension representative, will continue to be a fierce guardian of our pension benefits and a strong supporter of fixing Tier 6. Lee began her public school teaching career in 1997 at PS 143 in Corona, Queens. Two years later, she moved to nearby PS 16 and was elected the school's chapter leader in 2009. The following year, Lee trained to become a pension consultant for the UFT's Queens borough office, even as she continued teaching. She became a UFT pension representative in 2016 and soon began running pension clinics and workshops for the union throughout the city. Lee became a UFT teacher-member on the TRS board on Feb. 1, 2023, and the union's treasurer the following year.

ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:

  • Collect as many signatures as you can from in-service UFT members who belong to TRS on Victoria Lee's nominating petition form. The petition has room for only 10 signatures this year, so you'll need to print additional copies. Make sure that each petition is properly certified and return them by next Friday, April 4, if possible. The last day to drop off petitions at UFT headquarters, on the 17th floor, is Thursday, April 10.
  • Please post this election notice on your UFT bulletin board.

Summer school application process opens

The DOE is accepting applications for its Summer Rising 2025 program. The program is open to all students in grades K-12 who wish to attend. Teachers will receive mandated pre-service training on June 30 and July 1. Instruction for K-8 students, which is Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon each day, begins on July 2. Encourage your school leadership team to host a table at our Spring Education Conference on May 17

Organize a group of members from your school to attend this year's Spring Education Conference, our premier annual event that celebrates, supports and empowers our work as public school educators. We'll gather at the New York Hilton Midtown on Saturday, May 17, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Online registration will open soon, but in the meantime you can work together with your school leadership team to buy a table for your members by using this school purchase order. The purchase order deadline is April 30. This year's conference theme is "We Teach This City!" Our workshops will have a New York City focus: a social studies workshop on bringing the city's history to life in the classroom; a MindUP workshop titled "A NYC State of Mind: Finding Wonder in Our City"; an ELA workshop titled "Stories in the Skyline: Unlocking Students' Writing Potential"; an ELA workshop that explores poems about the five boroughs; and a math workshop on the power of visuals. Buy a table and bring your New York City spirit for a day of inspiration, professional learning and camaraderie.

Chapter Leader Checklist

To Do #1

Have you submitted your consultation committee notes?

Your consultation committee notes for your February meeting with your principal are due this week. Please submit your meeting notes via the Chapter Leader Hub. Submission of consultation committee meeting notes will be a factor in the size of your supplementary chapter leader stipend in June.

To Do #2

Help members find union dues for taxes.

Now that tax season is in full swing, many members will be looking for how much they paid in union dues in 2024. Information about the 2024 union dues is available on the UFT website.

To Do #3

Sign up for the next Delegate Assembly.

As your school's elected union representative, your participation at Delegate Assembly meetings is a crucial part of the UFT policymaking process. Look out for your invitation to the next Delegate Assembly on Wednesday, April 9.

To Do #4

Post "All Are Welcome" placards at your school.

As educators, we want to make sure our immigrant students feel safe when they are with us in school. The UFT has designed placards that incorporate the monarch butterfly, a common symbol of migration. Placards can be printed and posted in classrooms and other spaces to let all students know that they belong. Both color and black-and-white versions are available.

Download and print a placard

To Do #5

Share flyers with your members.

Here are flyers you can print and distribute in member mailboxes or post on your school's UFT bulletin board:

Work in progress

The UFT is tackling the following issues with the DOE and other city, state and federal-level entities as appropriate:

  • Working to finalize the pre-approved school-based options for the 2025‑26 school year.
  • Pushing the DOE to fix its broken Travel Reimbursement Approval Certification system.
  • Working with the DOE to finalize next week's notification to schools regarding class size funding.

Contract Empowerment & Enforcement

SBO voting can begin in late April

Chapter leaders will be able to conduct discussions about what school-based options (SBOs) their members want and then schedule an SBO vote using the ElectionBuddy platform starting Monday, April 28. The union is negotiating with the DOE on the pre-approved SBOs for the 2025–26 school year. Once these decisions are finalized, chapter leaders will be able to review all of the pre-approved SBOs. At that point, we will share detailed instructions and the relevant deadlines.

Health & Safety

Plan for Climate Day of Action on April 9

The DOE, with our strong support, is holding a Climate Action Day on Wednesday, April 9, on health, wellness and green space. It's the third of four Climate Action Days planned for this school year. Let educators in your school know that the UFT has compiled climate education teaching resources that will help them create lesson plans for each Climate Action Day.

Political Action

Come to the Hands Off! protest on Saturday, April 5

Saturday, April 5, is a national Day of Action to say loudly and clearly that we do not consent to the dismantling of our federal government and the destruction of our economy and social safety net for the benefit of billionaires like Elon Musk. President Trump and Musk are preparing to slash health care and education funding, allowing outsiders to access our personal data, and destroying jobs and government services. This is a crisis, and the time to act is now. Join the UFT and other unions, community organizations and fellow New Yorkers at the "Hands off! New York City Fights Back" Day of Action. Protesters will rally at Bryant Park at 42nd Street and march down Fifth Avenue to Madison Square Park. The UFT contingent will assemble at 12:30 p.m. next to the Salesforce skyscraper at Sixth Avenue and West 42nd Street.

Salary & Personnel

Apply for Chapter 683 positions

The DOE has released its job postings for the Chapter 683 summer program, a six-week, full-day instructional program for students in District 75. Once members have reviewed the job posting for their job title, they can apply via the Chapter 683 Application System. Chapter 683 staff will receive mandated pre-service professional development and orientation on July 1 and July 2. Instruction, which takes place Monday through Friday, begins for students on July 3 and ends on Aug. 13. There will be no classes on July 4. Please note that this year's deadline to apply — Monday, April 28 — is earlier than usual.

Open Market Transfer Plan opens on April 9

The Open Market Transfer Plan offers pedagogues, as well as paraprofessionals, access to job openings across the city. Starting on Wednesday, April 9, UFT members can view vacancies and submit online applications via the DOE website. During the open market transfer period from April 9 to Aug. 7, UFT members do not need a release from a principal to change schools. Under the plan, individuals can apply for all vacancies for which they are appropriately licensed. Few vacancies are posted in April since many principals wait to post openings until after school budgets are released. As principals create vacancies in their school's Galaxy budget system, they are added to the Open Market Transfer Plan section of the DOE website. UFT members may also apply to schools without current openings. We suggest you follow up your digital applications by mailing a hard copy to the school or sending a PDF via email to the school. The Open Market Transfer Plan Q&A on the UFT website offers more information about the process.

DOE employees must give 30 days' notice before resigning

DOE employees must give at least 30 calendar days' notice of their intention to resign, according to the Chancellor's Regulations. Therefore, if a UFT member wants to resign (not retire) effective Tuesday, Sept. 2, the first day of work in the 2025–26 school year, that member must submit a letter of resignation by Monday, Aug. 4. Principals are not permitted to ask UFT members to add the word "irrevocable" to their letters of resignation because UFT-represented educators have a contractual right to withdraw their resignation at a later date should they want to return to the DOE. According to the DOE, employees who resign without providing 30 days' notice will receive a problem code in their personnel file that will flag them for review should they wish to return in the future. On a related note, while there is no requirement to give notice for retirement, DOE employees who wish to take terminal leave prior to retirement must also give 30 days' notice.

Members on leave must notify the DOE of their plans by May 15

UFT-represented employees who are currently on leave must notify the DOE about their plans for the next school year by Thursday, May 15. If a member fails to notify the DOE about their plans or fails to apply for a leave extension by that date, the DOE will view that member as having voluntarily resigned from their position. The UFT and the DOE will email these members to remind them of this deadline. Members with questions should call the UFT at 212-331-6311.

Special Education

Special education committee training to prepare for spring meetings

Starting the new school year in compliance is the theme for the UFT Special Education Division's online training sessions in April for school chapter leaders. The training, arranged by Vice President for Special Education MaryJo Ginese, prepares chapter leaders and other members of their special education committee for the spring meeting of the principal and the special education committee at your school. Topics include developing your agenda for the spring meeting, identifying outstanding compliance issues that need to be addressed, and using the school budget summary and Galaxy allocation to respond to school leaders who claim there is no money in the budget to address outstanding issues. Chapter leaders will receive an email from their borough office with meeting details. That email will include a link to join the training session, which they should share with their fellow special education committee members. The training sessions will take place the week of April 7. Learn more about special education compliance and the special education committee on the UFT website.

'Know Your Rights' cards for immigrant families available

As the new administration targets undocumented immigrants for mass deportation, it's important to know that everyone in the United States, regardless of immigration status, has certain constitutional rights that they can exercise if confronted by ICE agents. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center has created a "know your rights" card to share this crucial information. Use this English-language template to print cards at home. You can find print-at-home cards in many other languages, too. Note that these cards, sometimes known as "red cards," do not constitute individualized legal advice.
