The Delegate Assembly of the United Federation of Teachers, the union’s highest policy-making body, today endorsed City Council Speaker Corey Johnson in the Democratic primary race for City Comptroller, and former State Deputy Attorney General Alvin Bragg for the Democratic nomination for Manhattan District Attorney.

The Delegate Assembly also endorsed Jo Anne Simon for Brooklyn Borough President and Dweynie Esther Paul-Dorsainvil for Brooklyn Surrogate Judge.

Among the City Council seats the Delegate Assembly endorsed were: Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa for Manhattan Council District 10; former Bronx Assistant District Attorney Julia Forman for Queens Council District 26; and Selvena Brooks-Powers for Queens Council District 31.

UFT President Michael Mulgrew said: “These candidates have been through our exhaustive review process, and have impressed our member-based election committees with their commitment to New York City’s public school students and their families.”

“In particular, our committees noted Corey Johnson’s longtime support of public education and his ability to make city government work on behalf of working families. Our members applauded Alvin Bragg’s role in challenging the Trump administration over the national census. We look forward to working with them and all of our more than 50 endorsed candidates for the benefit of our schools and our city.”

As part of the UFT endorsement process, candidates fill out surveys asking questions about their support for public schools and unions and are interview by local, borough, and citywide committees of UFT members. Those committees then recommend endorsements to the union’s governing body.
