WHEREAS, public school teachers in Los Angeles plan to walk out of their classrooms on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, to demand better pay and working conditions, as well as better learning conditions for their students; and
WHEREAS, their demands include a 6.5 percent raise retroactive to July 1, 2016, more school counselors, nurses and librarians, smaller class sizes, a reduction in standardized testing and regulations on charter school growth; and
WHEREAS, the Los Angeles Unified School District has only offered a 6 percent salary increase over the first two years of a three-year contract; and
WHEREAS, a fundamental principal of the labor movement is an injury to one is an injury to all; therefore be it
RESOLVED, the United Federation of Teachers stands in solidarity with the public school teachers of Los Angeles, and their union, the United Teachers of Los Angeles; and be it further
RESOLVED, the UFT urges its members to wear red on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, to show solidarity with public school teachers in Los Angeles.
