WHEREAS, more than 7,000 Marriott hotel workers in seven cities and a state spanning the continental United States – Detroit, Boston, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Hawaii are striking to demand a living wage so that one job is enough to live on, an end to unsafe overwork, benefits and job security; and
WHEREAS, during the past five years, Marriott’s profits have doubled and it is now the largest and richest hotel company in the world; and
WHEREAS, workers haven’t seen these soaring profits reflected in their paychecks or benefits, and many of those employees work multiple jobs to simply make ends meet; and
WHEREAS, the hotel chain’s movement toward automation puts further strain on workers who, without a contract, are unable to negotiate job security and are left doing an endless amount of work with a bare bones team; and
WHEREAS, as educators, UFT members are invested in seeing all industries provide decent jobs with good benefits because on day, our students will seek jobs that must provide more than subsistence wages; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the UFT stands with UNITE HERE and the striking Marriott hotel workers in their effort to fight corporate greed and advocate for fair working conditions; be it
RESOLVED, that while there are currently no hotels in New York City where UNITE HERE members are on strike, the UFT will publicize to our members and allies the ones that are; and be it further
RESOLVED, that we urge our fellow unionists in major league baseball and other sports not to cross the picket line; be it
RESOLVED, that the UFT will publicize the URL where members and allies can go to take the pledge to support UNITE HERE striking workers at Marriott as well as signing the one for organizations.
