WHEREAS, May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, began in the United States and is now recognized around the world as a day to honor and fight for the rights of workers; and
WHEREAS, May Day began with a movement for an eight-hour workday that led to a general strike in Chicago on May 1, 1886; and
WHEREAS, in 2006, mass rallies were held for immigration reform, and in recent years, labor unions and immigrant advocacy organizations in New York City have participated together in May Day demonstrations; and
WHEREAS, labor rights and immigrant rights groups will come together on Wednesday, May 1, in a strong show of force against the anti-worker and anti-immigrant policies coming from the White House; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the United Federation of Teachers will fully support and participate in the May Day 2019 rally at 5:30 p.m. in Columbus Circle and the subsequent march to Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue planned by labor groups, immigrant right groups, faith leaders and other advocates for the working class; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will fully support and join the coalition of organizations planning these actions.
