Resolution to support earthquake victims in Puerto Rico
WHEREAS, more than 1,280 earthquakes have hit Puerto Rico since Dec. 28, with more than two dozen of these of magnitude 4.5 or greater, according to the United States Geologic Survey; and
WHEREAS, Puerto Rico’s officials have released a preliminary estimate saying the quakes have caused about $110 million in damage, damaged or destroyed more than 550 homes, killed at least one person and injured nine; and
WHEREAS, the island is still recovering from the damage of Hurricane Maria and the subsequent neglect from the US federal government; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the United Federation of Teachers stands in solidarity with all earthquake victims in Puerto Rico; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will partner with NYSUT and the AFT to provide disaster relief to affected regions and encourage and assist members to support earthquake victims in Puerto Rico.
