Psychologists Appreciation Day 2022
More than 100 school psychologists came to UFT headquarters on Nov. 10, with hundreds more attending remotely, to mark the union’s sixth annual Psychologists Appreciation Day. “It’s a good way to just connect with your colleagues,” said Kristina Pillmeier, a 15-year veteran of the city public school system who covers the American Sign Language and English Schools and the Ella Baker School, all in Manhattan. With their jobs having become more demanding since the start of the pandemic, Pillmeier said it’s the one event “that feels like it’s curated for our needs.” Two workshops during the all-day event aimed to help school psychologists improve their practice by focusing on the use of assistive technology for classroom interventions and on the use of Relative Proficiency Indexes to measure cognitive abilities and student achievement. “It was a professional development opportunity,” said UFT Social Workers and Psychologists Chapter Leader Raul Garcia. “And it’s also an opportunity for us to share our appreciation.”
