How to eat healthfully, manage a classroom expertly, reduce stress, plant an edible garden on the windowsill, intervene in bullying, resolve disputes, create art projects with kids — there was a lot offered at the UFT’s Anne Curley Memorial Heath and Wellness Fair, held especially for paraprofessionals on June 1 at the union’s Queens borough office. More than 100 paras who attended the five-hour event gave it a thumbs-up. “The only criticism was that they wanted more, asking for a full day of workshops next year,” said Linda Vila-Passione, the union’s violence prevention facilitator in Queens. There was more expertise on tap at the event’s information fair. Specialists were on hand at numerous booths to educate participants about acupuncture, heart health, diabetes, Workers’ Compensation and child support. The fair, in its second year, was a fitting memorial to Curley, who served as the borough’s paraprofessional coordinator and died last year. “Anne was instrumental in creating the first fair and expressed the importance of making it a yearly event, and so we carried on in her name,” said Vila-Passione. above: Healthy lifestyles get a pitch from Vila-Passione. left: Tonia Calvo from PS 79 learns about making masks for classroom art projects. below: Workshops were packed.
