As a student emerged from the dressing room in a cascading, sleeveless peach-colored gown, her school chaperones gushed and the student beamed — she had found the perfect prom gown. The best part? Her new dress was free, thanks to the generosity of UFT members who donated formal wear for the union’s annual Prom Boutique on May 11. Almost 1,800 middle and high school students chose from among thousands of dresses and tuxedos, then accessorized with shoes and jewelry, at the event in the union’s Bronx borough office. Jenly Castillo-Betances, a school counselor at Accion Academy in the Bronx, takes her students to the union’s Prom Boutique every year. Without it, she said, a lot of them likely wouldn’t have anything to wear to the prom. “They’re in need of these dresses,” she said. For UFT District 11 Representative Dana Falciglia, who organizes the event every year, the most fulfilling part is “seeing the faces of the students when they find that perfect dress or sharp suit.”
