Tom Brown, the UFT’s assistant treasurer, was re-elected last spring as a trustee on the Teachers’ Retirement System board and will serve a new three-year term.
Brown joins David Kazansky and Debra Penny as the three teacher representatives on the seven-member TRS board. The mayor appoints two of the other four board members, and the city comptroller and the city schools chancellor appoint one each.
Brown is a longtime advocate of pension rights. In 1997, he began as a part-time pension consultant for the union. He became a UFT special representative to the Pension Department in 2007. Brown has shared his knowledge of pension-related issues at school meetings citywide, conducted pension clinics and workshops, and trained new pension consultants.
He was first elected as a TRS trustee in the spring of 2014. He was elected the union’s assistant treasurer in September 2014.
“Doing this work for the members is so rewarding,” Brown said. “Looking after our members’ pensions, in partnership with David and Debra, takes on additional meaning in this difficult time.”
