A Trip To The Zoo
Zoological Gardens and Parks have long been popular destinations for school field trips. These visits, and the weeks prior to such an outing, can be fully utilized for their educational potential, with teacher pre-planning. The purpose of this unit is to provide educational activities that will provide structure for a field trip to the zoo.
Whales and our World
The activities in this unit will provide students with a basic understanding of the problems surrounding the exploitation of the environment, the causes and consequences of extinction, the remedial measures now underway to protect endangered species and the need for more corrective legislation and action.
Elephants in the wild and in captivity
This unit will provide information about the physical, behavioral and social needs of elephants. Students will explore the behaviors of elephants in the wild including family structure and relationships, home ranges, and diminishing habitat. Students will compare this to the lives of elephants in captivity.
Monkeys and Apes Curriculum, grades 2 to 6
This unit will enable students to identify monkeys and apes and the similarities they share with humans. Their differences will be explored as well.
Pigeons in the City
There is an abundance of information available on pet birds around us. On a nature of neighborhood walk, it may be interesting to point out a wren, sparrow, or even a bluejay. What many people forget or ignore is that there are pigeons all around us. Pigeons are part of our daily lives, but they are sometimes treated as second class birds.
Humans and the Environment
The diet-health connection established in the 1980's is evolving, in the 1990's, into a diet-health-environment connection. This unit will illustrate how our daily choices in the areas o diet, exercise, recreation hobbies and attitudes affect not only our own well-being, but also the well-being of other animals and all living things.
Squirrels
The activities in this unit will acquaint students with the life of the squirrels living in their neighborhood and with their relationship to each other and to their environment. The underlying goal is to increase student respect and concern for, and interest in, other living species.
Big Books
It appears as though primary school classes are not always involved in the development of science fair projects for class, school-wide and school district display. Teachers at the primary school level may prefer involvement though the development of a big-book which students in their classes contribute to.
Birdwatching »
This unit will explore the problems involved in classroom chick hatching projects. It will discuss the wide variety of alternative projects which exist with a focus on bird watching. The underlying goal will be to involve young students in the exciting, highly motivating, and often awe-inspiring study of birds in their natural environments.
