Eleven busloads of UFT members and school community members were among the tens of thousands of demonstrators who gathered at the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, Aug. 26, to mark the 60th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Marilyn Brown, an IEP teacher at PS 154 in Harlem, described the day as “bittersweet.” She said she identified with “not a commemoration, a continuation,” the march’s tagline. “I’m fighting to teach African American history, which is American history,” she said. “I’m fighting to keep my union intact from those who would dismantle it. In 20 years, I don’t want my students to have to fight for the same things.” UFT Vice President for Academic High Schools Janella Hinds was among the UFT officers at the march. “I am proud to stand with UFT activists at this important commemoration,” she said. “The labor movement and the fight for civil and human rights are inextricably linked.”
