District 12’s Scholarship Breakfast, which has grown substantially since its 2018 inception, brought nearly 500 public school educators, students and families to Villa Barone Manor in the Bronx on June 3. “It’s an amazing and heartwarming event,” said UFT District 12 Representative Steven Goldberg. “Every school in the district has an honoree this year.” Thirty-six 5th- and 8th-grade scholarship winners were awarded new laptops. For the first time, four pre-K students received tablets. Teachers Edna Ruiz of CS 300 and David Meade of the Samara Community School, paraprofessional Maria Estrada of PS 214 and school secretary Grace Vargas of Archer Elementary School were among the 12 school staff honorees, all nominated by colleagues. Ruiz said she was in tears when she heard she was being recognized. “It is humbling to receive this award from my peers,” she said. Two teachers who died this school year — Chapter Leader Meryl Volpe of PS 57 and physical education teacher Ryan Calvi of PS 195 — were honored with memorial plaques.
