Two children happily make reading choices at a First Book giveaway at PS 33 in Manhattan on Feb. 4. At the Chelsea event, co-sponsored by the UFT and the AFT, 5,000 free books were distributed to students who are asylum seekers, recent immigrants or newcomers to New York City public schools. Each child was able to select five to 10 books to take home. The books were donated by the nonprofit First Book, which provides books for children who might otherwise not have access to them.
