What better way to enjoy the summer than with rock-climbing and cotton candy? The UFT’s Staten Island borough office partnered with local elected officials and organizations to provide backpacks and other supplies, food and fun for more than 400 families during its annual supplies giveaway at the Staten Island Marine Corps League Detachment 246 on Aug. 2. Staten Island Borough Representative Sean Rotkowitz said his favorite part of the event is “seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces” when they receive new school supplies. Parent Michelle Small heard about the event from the principal of her 7-year-old son’s school in Stapleton after she discussed her family’s financial struggles with her. “She was very courteous in helping me out,” said Small, who received supplies for her son. Volunteer Randi Liebson, a special ed teacher and the chapter leader at PS 78 in Stapleton, marveled at the collaboration among all the organizations to pull the event off. “This is what makes us a community,” she said.
