For Black History Month and Women’s History Month, I dress up like a historical figure every day. I display a picture of that historical figure (here, aviation pioneer John C. Robinson) and teach a short social studies lesson about the person and their significance. Students then write about what they’ve learned in their notebooks, so by the end of March, students have written dozens of entries about pioneers in Black history and women’s history. My costumes keep the students engaged and help them better retain the information they’re learning.
