4 resolutions passed at June Delegate Assembly

New York Teacher

Four resolutions were overwhelmingly approved by the Delegate Assembly at its final meeting of the 2023–24 school year on June 12. Delegates attended both in person in Shanker Hall and via telephone.

The DA voted to tackle the overassessment of elementary school students. The resolution called on the UFT to work with the city Department of Education to evaluate current assessment policies and practices in an effort to reduce the overall number of assessments, eliminate redundancy and reduce the time that educators spend on test prep and administration. The goal would be to identify and prioritize those assessments that don’t require lots of time to administer and grade but yield useful data that can inform instruction in elementary schools.

The DA passed the following three resolutions as well:

  • To commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.
  • To permit the UFT Executive Board to vote on candidate endorsements in late-breaking political races during the summer.
  • To extend the Delegate Assembly’s hybrid rules, adopted following the COVID-19 pandemic, through the end of the 2024–25 school year.
