Push to improve pension COLA

Resolutions

Delegates at the UFT Delegate Assembly approved a resolution calling for the union to push for a fairer cost of living adjustment (COLA) for New York City public employee pensions.

“The purpose of a COLA is to assure our pensions keep pace with the rising cost of living,” UFT Treasurer Victoria Lee said while introducing the measure during the first Delegate Assembly of the school year on Oct. 16.

The resolution committed the union to launching a comprehensive campaign to push the governor and the state Legislature to pass state legislation to revise the way the COLA for public employee pensions is calculated.

“By supporting this resolution, we’re taking action to ensure the COLA fulfills its true purpose: to safeguard our retirees’ right to a dignified retirement,” Lee said. “It sends a powerful message that our union stands with its members through every chapter of their lives.”
