Dorothy Lowery, Age 84

Dorothy Lowery began her long career in education as a parent volunteer when her own children entered school. Eventually, she was hired as a paraprofessional, worked as a school secretary and finally, after earning her bachelor’s degree, became a teacher. She was an active member of the UFT, participating in each year’s Labor Day Parade and numerous phone banks. After her retirement in 1998, Dorothy remained involved in the profession, mentoring new teachers at PS 132 in the Bronx. She also volunteered with the New York Public Library’s adult literacy program and as a community emergency responder. In her down time, she would go bowling with her husband or enjoy a game of Uno. Dorothy is survived by her brother, her sisters-in-law, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
