The expected enrollment of more than 1,000 additional students in New York City public schools as a result of the recent arrival of more than 6,000 migrants from the southern border will most definitely put undue stress and strain on the system. How are teachers going to deal with larger class sizes? Will there be enough teachers to cover these classes throughout the school system? The schools chancellor and the mayor should have really thought this situation out thoroughly before agreeing to accept this many new students. The New York City Department of Education needs to be better organized at all levels, and the UFT needs to be sure its school-based members are not going to be overwhelmed during the new school year, since we are still dealing with COVID-19.
