To the Editor:

Several teachers in my school are expecting, and I have had the unique privilege of attending what had formerly been a female-only gathering: baby showers.

The new mothers are certainly missed as they care for their adorable new babies, yet I find it strange that a profession with such a strong female presence does not have a more progressive manner of dealing with pregnancy and birth.

The present system is punitive as members use sick days for a limited time period. Equating giving birth with sickness is out of date!

Bringing new life into the world should be a time of celebration! An extended period off with full pay and no loss of sick days along with job security at one’s present position makes more sense.
