Stop the gun violence

New York Teacher

I’m so saddened about the shootings that are constantly and easily happening in our children’s schools and our workplaces. My heart is broken; my mind is full of fear.

As a parent and an educator, I want to say that we all should be asking for meaningful workshops and trainings. We should rally together and request a training in active shooter preparedness.

Let’s learn how to prepare and fight: fight for our kids and fight for us to return home to our families.

We can’t say it won’t happen here or to us. There’s no guarantee.

We need useful, informative safety and defense trainings.

I wish you all peace and love during these uncertain times.

A recent Facebook post seemed to articulate my own cynicism concerning our politician’s inability to enact meaningful gun legislation: “Maybe we should honor the students who gave their lives so people could have their guns.”

When President Donald Trump suggested we arm teachers in response to school shootings, I knew something was amiss. It is a strange logic to address the scourge of gun violence with more guns.

Those who defend the right to bear arms often talk about issues on the periphery of mass shootings, such as the need for greater mental health services, the hate-filled media and school security. When the conversation is moved to such issues, the issue of gun legislation is buried, and nothing gets done.

Prohibiting the sale and manufacture of assault weapons should be a no-brainer, as such weapons are not needed nor used for hunting or home defense. Comprehensive background checks and registration for everyone purchasing a gun would help as well. A degree of gun regulation is long overdue.

The UFT needs to be actively involved in this issue as schools are all too often the targets of gun atrocities.
