VP for Middle Schools
In New York City public schools, middle school educators wear many hats. We act as role models, advisers, mentors, counselors and sometimes surrogate parents for our students. Our work goes well beyond helping students pass their exams; we guide children to make the right choices and take the appropriate paths. We facilitate self-expression, social and emotional well-being, and academic growth in our students during a period in their lives of significant physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.
Our dedication and passion for what we do make our school communities brighter and more supportive places for students, families and staff.
Being a middle school educator is a calling, and it’s high time we recognize our colleagues’ invaluable contributions.
To that end, I am thrilled to announce the union’s first-ever Middle School Awards Night.
We will bestow the following awards:
Learning Environment: This award recognizes educators who create exceptional spaces that not only inspire student learning but also nurture their students’ social and emotional growth.

Long-Term Student Impact: This award recognizes educators who have shaped their students’ futures in enduring and life-changing ways and provide ongoing encouragement and guidance after these children have left their classroom.
School Culture: This award recognizes educators who contribute to a welcoming, supportive and inclusive school environment for all students through their participation in schoolwide programs and initiatives.
Personalized Support: This award honors educators who foster both academic success and personal growth in their students by offering tailored support and building meaningful connections.

Our awards celebrate the countless ways we strive to enhance the lives of our students, uplift our school communities and support our colleagues. Each award winner was nominated by a colleague.
Our Middle School Awards Night will be held on Thursday, May 15, from 4 to 8 p.m., at union headquarters in lower Manhattan. I hope to see you there!
