UFT President Michael Mulgrew on Trump administration's plans to dismantle U.S. Department of Education

Press Releases

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew said the Trump administration's executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education will harm the nation's most vulnerable students.

"We will join our national union and public education allies to protect students and educators. We are working with our partners to file lawsuits to stop this executive overreach. In the meantime, we will hold the federal government accountable for providing the resources our school communities have been promised under the laws of our country," said Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers.

Mulgrew's earlier comment on the Trump administration's firing of 1,300 workers at the U.S. Department of Education:

"This administration's first educational policy decision is to target children with disabilities and children in poverty. That is outrageous. Educators, by our very DNA, protect our students. So that’s what we will do. We will fight for children," said UFT President Michael Mulgrew.

This earlier decisision effectively gutted the department that allocates funds for special education students and children living in poverty, manages federal loans for college and enforces civil rights laws in schools.
