UFT statement on statewide cell phone policy proposal
Press Releases
"We support a bell-to-bell approach. New York City's experience with a patchwork of cell phone policies is clear: Schools with a successful policy collect the phones as students walk into the building in the morning and return them at the end of the day."
— UFT President Michael Mulgrew
The UFT could support a policy in which educators would not be the first or sole line of enforcement; school districts must pay for the cost, not individual schools; enforcement is consistent, fair and uniform; and schools have emergency contact lines set up for parents.
