As a newly hired pedagogue, you will receive an e-mail from the DOE’s Department of Human Resources with important information on next steps in your career. This information should be placed in your official school file, but you should keep a copy for yourself in a safe place for future reference. Make sure this information is correct as it will affect your excessing seniority and date of completion of probation. If you find any errors, or you have any questions, please notify your chapter leader who can help you resolve the problem. For further details, see Chancellor's Regulation C-205.
If you accept a new position under a different license (reappointment or rehire), you will become probationary in the new license. Under state law, traveling tenure applies and your second probationary period will be shorter than the first. There are also special agreements in shortage area licenses that result in an even shorter probationary period. If you are hired and have regular sub service in the same license, the NYC DOE should grant you a shortened probationary period (known as Jarema credit).
For more information on any of these scenarios, please call us at 212-331-6311 and ask to speak to a UFT certification specialist. For additional guidance, see the UFT's New Teachers page.
