More than a year ago, the School Counselors Conference was the last UFT conference held before COVID-19 shut down school buildings. This year’s event, held on March 20 on Zoom, found school counselors grappling with a new set of challenges as the end of the pandemic slowly comes into view.

At our 2021 School Counselors Conference, Misha Thomas, a trauma expert from Cornell University, spoke about how we can support students through the trauma of the Covid-19 pandemic. You can read her speech online.

Tell graduating seniors about the John P. Tobin Scholarship, a $1,000 college scholarship for student athletes.

“In our school,” Pardo says, “we do as many things as we can to engage students. Our goal is to create a safe space where students feel they belong and are validated.” Pardo has been working remotely since March and finds it extremely difficult because she is a hands-on person.

High school seniors have until Dec. 31 to apply for the UFT’s $5,000 Albert Shanker college scholarships.

More than 1,000 students, parents, teachers and school counselors participate in the first virtual UFT College Fair, held via Zoom in October.
