UFT statement on the firing of workers at the U.S. Department of Education

Press Releases

"This administration's first educational policy decision is to target children with disabilities and children in poverty. That is outrageous. Educators, by our very DNA, protect our students. So that’s what we will do. We will fight for children."
—UFT President Michael Mulgrew.

The Trump administration's firing of 1,300 workers at the U.S. DOE comes as President Trump calls for the elimination of the agency. This decision will effectively gut the department that allocates Title I funds, manages federal loans for college and enforces civil rights laws in schools.

The UFT will continue to work with its national affiliate, the AFT, which has launched four legal challenges to block efforts by the administration to access student and other private data and to preserve civil rights.
