Resolution to support an end to the cycle of violence in the Middle East
WHEREAS, as an organization, we recognize that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a complex and deeply rooted issue with historical, political and humanitarian dimensions; and
WHEREAS, thousands of people have been killed or injured and scores of others taken hostage in the unconscionable terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel this past weekend; and
WHEREAS, these victims were innocent civilians, including children, young people and teenagers attending a music festival; citizens from other countries including Americans; and babies, the elderly and infirm; and
WHEREAS, escalating violence threatens to bring even more death and destruction upon civilians in Israel and Palestine; and
WHEREAS, many of our community members have family and friends in the region and cultural ties to Israel and Palestinian territories; and
WHEREAS, we are concerned for the safety of the Israeli and Palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire; and
WHEREAS, our thoughts are with those affected by this conflict, and we hope for a sustainable and lasting resolution that promotes peace, stability and justice in the region; therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the UFT condemns the attack; and be it further
RESOLVED, that we encourage open dialogue and respect for differing perspectives while emphasizing the importance of peaceful negotiations, mutual understanding and the protection of human rights for all the parties involved; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT stands in support of all those working toward peace in the region because everyone deserves to live in safety and with dignity and security; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT works with those willing to make any and all efforts to end the cycle of violence and to bring peace to the region for Palestinians and Israelis alike.
