More than three dozen UFT members turned out for fun and games at Bingo Night at the union’s Queens borough office on Nov. 22 to raise awareness of the Committee on Political Education (COPE), the union’s political action arm that is funded fully by voluntary contributions. Before the bingo, members enjoyed classic board and card games such as Uno, spades, Chutes and Ladders, Jenga and Connect 4. “It was a nice way of winding down after a stressful work week,” said Trina Zeigler, a paraprofessional at PS 206 in Queens, adding that she “learned that COPE is the political voice for members to improve the contract and rights and to fight for resources and tools for our children and schools.” UFT District 25 Representative Lamar Hughes, the Queens political action coordinator, said a number of members increased their COPE contributions before the night was through. A special thank-you and shout-out went to Vernetta Deshommes, a teacher at PS 136 in District 29, Queens, and the Queens UFT COPE liaison, for putting the night together.
