NYC Association of Foreign Language Teachers/UFT conference
The New York City Association of Foreign Language Teachers/UFT’s annual spring professional development conference attracted 75 educators to UFT headquarters in Manhattan for the group’s second in-person event since the pandemic. “Our objective is to provide professional development emphasizing best practices in the teaching and learning of multiple world languages and cultures,” said committee President Irma Evangelista. She noted the conference addressed the implementation of new state standards going into effect for foreign language instruction. After a plenary that featured keynote speaker Ron Woo, the executive director of the New York State Statewide Language Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network at New York University, educators took part in workshops. Maria Lago Brea of Archimedes Academy in the Bronx called the conference “the best opportunity to meet other world language educators and be able to cooperate and share knowledge.” She said she learned how to use Flip (formerly Flipgrid) — a video discussion and sharing app — in the “Flipping Into Oral Proficiency” session.
