Resolution to support migrant families with children in New York City public schools
WHEREAS, a multitude of asylum seekers have crossed the US-Mexico border seeking protection from persecution and serious human rights violations in their home country; and
WHEREAS, Governors Greg Abbott (Texas), Ron DeSantis (Florida) and El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser have sent thousands of migrants on buses to New York City; the city regarded as the melting pot of cultures, ethnicities and religions which houses the symbol of migrants, the Statue of Liberty; and
WHEREAS, this multitude of migrants are made up of children and families who need a range of support from clothing, food, and education; and
WHEREAS, New York City schools are beginning to see an increase in populations of students from these migrant families with no support, although already being responsible for all of its diverse populations of students in New York City; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the UFT support these schools by advocating for appropriate funding based on the number of students in the schools that can be used for additional staffing, school and classroom resources, professional support and training for staff members in direct contact with these children; and be it
FINALLY RESOLVED, that the UFT will advocate for the necessities for these families by providing them with information necessary to access services to acclimate them to life in New York City as soon as possible. These basic needs include but are not limited to the following: permanent and safe housing, social-emotional support and clothing.
