WHEREAS, the four most recognized city officials; the mayor, comptroller, public advocate and city council speaker have recently all been men; and

WHEREAS, we know that the presence of women’s voices as a part of policymaking is paramount; and

WHEREAS, women will for the first time make up a majority of the seats on the City Council and so should also hold a place of leadership, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, the UFT will seek to empower women Council members interested in serving as City Council Speaker; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the union will urge all Council members to select a woman for City Council Speaker when the new Council convenes in January 2022; and be it further

RESOLVED, the UFT will continue to advocate for women to serve in our city, state, and federal government going forward.
