Resolution commemorating the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots

UFT Resolutions

Whereas, the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) has consistently been at the forefront of social justice movements, recognizing the importance of taking a stance against bigotry, discrimination and homophobia; and 

Whereas, the Stonewall Riots, which took place on June 28, 1969, marked a pivotal moment in LGBTQIA+ history, sparking a modern civil rights movement; and 

Whereas, in the 55 years since the Stonewall Riots, significant progress has been made in advancing LGBTQIA+ rights, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, anti-discrimination protections, and increased visibility and representation of LGBTQIA+ individuals in various sectors; and 

Whereas, the LGBTQIA+ community has witnessed a record number of favorable laws being passed to protect their rights and enhance their well-being, reflecting a growing acceptance and understanding of diversity and inclusion in our society; and 

Whereas, this year, a record number of Anti-LGBTQIA+ laws have been passed across the country, aiming to undermine efforts to promote equality and inclusivity; instead, perpetuating marginalization of the LGBTQIA+ community; and 

Whereas, recent infiltrations of our Community Education Councils (CECs) across the city have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of LGBTQIA+ students, particularly trans students, highlighting the continued need for vigilance and advocacy to protect their rights and dignity; and 

Whereas, there is a connection between New York City public school teachers and students and the events associated with the Stonewall Riots and the subsequent inaugural Liberation March, underscoring the role of educators and students in advocating for social justice and equality; therefore, be it 

Resolved that the UFT express its evident disappointment in the legislative system for passing laws that marginalize the LGBTQIA+ community and the CECs that have spewed strong adversarial language about members of the LGBTQIA+ community; and, be it further 

Resolved, that the UFT, in collaboration with the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), will bring LGBTQIA+ trainings to its members to increase awareness, understanding, and sensitivity towards LGBTQIA+ issues within schools and communities; and, be it further 

Resolved, that the UFT will educate its members about the current state of the LGBTQIA+ community through LGBTQIA+ town halls hosted by the Pride Committee to promote dialogue, learning, and solidarity in advancing LGBTQIA+ rights and equality; finally, be it 

Resolved, the UFT will make a strong presence at this year's Pride March to demonstrate solidarity, support, and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusivity in our schools, workplaces, and society.
