Resolution to support the victims of Hurricane Dorian
WHEREAS, Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands in early September 2019 and grazed the coasts of Florida and South Carolina before making final landfall in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on Sept. 6; and
WHEREAS, the hurricane stalled over the Bahamas for two days, causing major damage and death which resulted in $7 billion in property damage, affecting as many as 13,000 homes, contaminating wells with seawater, knocking out electricity and causing “the greatest national crisis in our country’s history,” according to Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis; and
WHEREAS, the hurricane caused blackouts and property damage in the Virgin Islands and other locations in its path; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the United Federation of Teachers stands in solidarity with all victims of Hurricane Dorian; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT will partner with NYSUT and the AFT to provide disaster relief to affected regions and encourage and assist members to support Hurricane Dorian victims.
